Something new I wanted to throw out there. Travel, I seem to do lots of it so thought I would put word out that there are certain cities in which I am offering sessions. It helps to reduce travel costs when 3 or more sessions are booked. If you have friends or family out of state who may be interested in commissioned work please pass this along. Next year it will be more organized with dates and cities listed in advance.

a busy week...

Just wanted to check in and say hello. A very busy week coming to an end with a lot of phone calls and ordering consults to catch up on. The week started off with an amazing workshop by the very talented (and witty!) Karen Carey on photographing female models. Yes, very different than my childhood work but will really come in handy for my maternity and family work. Also just adding to my "toolbox" so to speak for my up and coming couples work. Karen is a film (looove that) photographer with a strong background in fashion photography, having both been one and photographed them she knows her stuff.

Airports, sessions, lots of prints delivered, painting and overhauling my office... and finishing off this week with, lucky me, the opportunity to photograph Dave Matthews Band at Nissan Pav! Wish me luck. Have always wanted to work my way into that pit front stage, now I have my chance and with DMB...

Oh, almost forgot. My hair which was quite long has been chopped off, the whole lot of it! Had been thinking about locks of love, not sure if I had enough to donate but ended up with 11 inches. Check out locks of love, it really is a great cause.

So there will be no excuse not to have your photographs for your holiday card! Or just because these sittings are so darn FUN!
This is how it will work.
Email me (heather@heatherbowes.com)
Please include your name, phone, number of children (no more than 3 per sitting please) and email address. Also include your preferred date and time.

Because there is a bit of a wait list for available sittings we will contact those folks first and then we will contact each person on the list in the order of email received. You will have 48 hours to confirm the date and time with the $50 session fee which you may call in to Madeleine's or stop by. Please be sure you email me with the best way to reach you.

For those who haven't heard about all the fun:
Sessions are 20 min long and include an in person ordering appt and online gallery to view your proofs.

who are you?

ever wonder? ever stop and think?
What is it that moves you, that makes you smile,

What defines you?

as my life turns down different paths, sometimes coming full circle and sometimes leading me down new ventures I am constantly exploring all the amazing things and people which surround me. With this I turn to my art to help me see more clearly, hear the sounds I may have missed, connect with the people I may have been hesitant to approach and learn from.

New ventures are always making their way into my life. When something sparks my interest I find myself looking to photograph, to explore, to learn, to make my voice heard or to create a voice for another.

Connections between people have always intruiged me, what attracts two souls and what makes them hold on. The joy, the difficulties. A family, a couple dreaming and struggling to create a family of their own, two souls committing for life, two souls contemplating it. The stumbles, the hopes and dreams, ...
I think as lives get chaotic we forget to step away and remind ourselves what it is that grounds us. And then connect again...

Although my main photography work remains of children I will be working on a new type of portrait collections. No, not weddings but rather couple sessions. For whatever reason...
I have a few couples in mind who will be "coming along for the ride" in the next few months as I explore this. Would love to hear any thoughts and ideas about this. Will promise to share as I move forward.

The next scheduled Madeleine session will probably be in October (will be filled by those on wait list), and then I will try and set up one more before the holidays.

To receive prints/cards for the holidays session must be completed by November 25th. Newborns would be the exception!

Please call or email me if you are interested in booking a session, if you have been in touch with me about a session date in July I will be calling and confirming these by the weeks end.

just a peek from a recent session... This was fun!

mother earth...

It is again the time of the year to restock my packaging materials, brochures, info packets and biz cards. As I was getting ready to send out my order for pretty boxes bags and bows I stopped for a moment. Here I am thinking about and trying to do my best to reduce my negative impact on this earth, teach my children about the importance of recycling and reducing and it dawned on me how wasteful all this pretty stuff can be. Yes it is fun and beautiful but maybe I can do something better. After doing some research I found my answer, planting trees. That is what I will do instead, for every child and famly I photograph I will be donating $15 to www.americanforests.org. In return they will plant 15 trees! 15 trees for every client will be something that I can do to give back, help make this earth a cleaner and better place for all of our children.
As for informational packets, brochures and packaging I will be buying recycled paper, sending as much as I can through emails, making as much information as I can available on my website and minimalizing my packaging to a pretty ribbon, reusing boxes from my lab/printer and keeping things simple.

Hopefully clients all understand this and agree that we all must try and do something to make a difference.

If you haven't read The Giving Tree it is worth the read. A favorite with my little boy.

Just two from a recent session I started editing tonight. This is why I LOVE my work so very much, I can't imagine doing anything else. Capturing this love and joy, this very moment in their life so that it may bring back memories for many many years is a little like magic to me.
I maybe I can ask "mom" if I can share this entire session on my website!


It's been busy, photographing and creating have taken up any time to get back here and post (thats how I like it though!)

I will be offering a few FUN sessions, just thinking through the details. Something to help get through those HOT days of summer. Hmmm.. ice cream, beach fun, watermelon slices, sprinklers. Let me put it together in the next few days before I head out to Vancouver WA for a workshop.
Can't wait for this workshop with the very very talented photographer Cheryl Jacobs. Always great to get out with other photogs and learn from each other. Her workshops are known to make quite an impact on those who attend.

a purpose...

Some photographers work to capture relationships, others capture vivid colors with fun and fancy, still others are there to create the perfect pose and perfect smile.

Through my lens I work to capture the wonder, the childhood wonder which somehow fades away as silently and quickly as the last summer firefly. It may be black and white, sometimes color. May not even see a face, just a glimpse of something which makes us remember that time. That time which we often rush our own children through. The time to turn over every rock to see what is underneath, to look for bright red ladybugs or to simply feel the sand run through our fingers as the sound of the surf brings us home.

I am beginning to make some changes. Changes to make a difference in what is left here on this earth for our children. If there is one thing that I would like to accomplish with my photographs it is to show the importance of nature; clean oceans, blue skies, forests to explore, mountains to climb. It is so evident to me and so very important.

I don't know why this hasn't surfaced before. My photographs and the style of my art seems to grow stronger each day my children grow older. Each day that I watch them digging for worms, catching helicopters as they fall from the trees, running along the beach racing the tide as it washes away their footprints I know what I must show people. What I strive to capture in my photographs and what I would like to create with my business.

You may start to see some changes in my website and my posts here. I will be spending some time revising my mission statement and researching ways to help Heather Bowes Photography be green and support a cleaner and better earth for our children. I invite you to join me as much or as little as you like. Stop by here to learn as I do and make some changes as I do.

lucky me...

every day I am reminded how lucky I am to work with so many wonderful children and families. I could go on and on about this but for now only have a moment to share with you this darling little girl I photographed today.

The Mother's Day Collection has been sold out. Now I have to think of something for the Daddy's and feel as though the pressure is on! I won't be able to offer such a great deal as I did with this one, am thinking more along the lines of a contest. Keep checking back here so you don't miss out!
